Arkansas Valley", published by O.L. Baskin & Co. in 1881. This history
pertains only to the portion of the book covering Bent County, and was
written by Charles W. Bowman, editor and proprietor of the West Las
Animas Leader, a paper he founded in 1873. When Charles wrote this
history Bent County was a very large county, encompassing portions or
all of what is now Prowers, Bent, Otero, Kiowa, Kit Carson, Lincoln and
