La Junta City Directory
1914 - 1915
La Junta, population 6,000, is sixty-three miles east of Pueblo, on the Santa Fe Railroad and the Arkansas River. It is the county seat of Otero County, and the metropolis of the Arkansas Valley east of Pueblo. The big railroad shops are the principal source of prosperity of the city, there being 1,073 railroad employees at this point. Twenty-three passenger trains pass through La Junta daily.
The city owns its water works. The telephone company has one thousand and forty subscribers. Eleven churches hold services here, and more than twenty lodges are represented here. The Elks, who own their own home, have more than nine hundred members. The public library, containing over fifteen thousand volumes, was given to the city and is maintained by a philanthropic citizen of La Junta
There are nine schools in the district. Two of these, the Park School and the North La Junta School, have been recently erected at a cost of sixty thousand dollars. The County High School is located here. Besides the Preparatory Department there is a Commercial Department in which a full business course is taught. The Boy's Club, which has a fine gymnasium and a library of over two thousand volumes, is under the supervision of the School Board.
The new Rourke Theatre, costing $40,000, and the new Santa Fe general office building costing over $30,000 have just recently been completed. The cement bridge over the Arkansas River, costing $61,000 has just been finished. It is 523 feet long and is one of the finest bridges in the entire West.
There has been a wonderful improvement in the city in the last two years, as in addition to the above mentioned structures a number of fine business blocks and fine residences have been erected. Another indication is the fact that each of the three printing establishments has installed a new Standard Merganthaler linotype.
La Junta is a live, up-to-date city, and the best city of its size in the state of Colorado.
